Vjosa Rafting is a 3-4 hour, beginner-friendly half-day tour on the Vjosa River, departing from Përmet, Albania, the gateway town to the Vjosa Wild River National Park. For €35 per person, you'll navigate Class II-III rapids over roughly 12-14 km, much of it through the dramatic Këlcyra Gorge. All gear — neoprene suit, helmet, and life jacket — plus a certified guide and round-trip transport from Përmet are included. Family-friendly for ages 6 and up, no prior experience is needed, and trips run rain or shine.
Welcome to the ultimate aquatic adventure in the heart of Albania. Our Half-Day Vjosa Rafting tour is expertly designed for both first-time paddlers and seasoned outdoor enthusiasts. Flowing freely from the Pindus Mountains in Greece all the way to the Adriatic Sea, the Vjosa River is widely celebrated as the 'Blue Heart of Europe.' Because it remains entirely untamed and un-dammed, it offers a dynamic, naturally shifting riverbed that makes every single rafting trip a completely unique experience.
Based right here in Përmet, the city of roses and the undisputed capital of Albanian eco-tourism, we take you away from the crowded tourist traps and plunge you directly into untouched wilderness. As you navigate the crystal-clear, azure waters, you will find yourself flanked by towering limestone canyons, lush green riverbanks, and the majestic peaks of the Trebeshinë-Dhëmbel-Nemërçkë mountain range.
Your adventure begins at our central meeting point in Përmet. You will be greeted by our certified guides and equipped with safety gear.
We board our transport vehicles for a highly scenic 30-minute drive up the Vjosa Valley.
Before stepping into the rafts, our senior guides conduct a comprehensive safety briefing on the riverbank.
The main event! We launch our rafts into the wild Vjosa and enter the thrilling Class II and Class III rapids.
The Vjosa Rafting tour departs from our base camp in Përmet town center, easily reached on foot from any hotel or guesthouse in town. If you're arriving by car, Përmet sits on the SH75 highway, about 25 km north of Këlcyra and roughly 100 km southeast of Gjirokastër via Tepelenë. After a short meet-and-greet at base camp, our team drives the group about 30 minutes up the Vjosa Valley toward the put-in point near the edge of the Vjosa Wild River National Park, passing close to the dramatic Këlcyra Gorge en route. No personal transport is required — round-trip transfer from Përmet is included in the price.
The Vjosa River's water levels and rafting conditions change significantly with the seasons. Spring (April-May) brings the highest water levels from snowmelt, producing faster, more powerful Class II-III rapids — exciting but with slightly cooler water temperatures. Summer (June-August) is the most popular season, with warmer water, reliable weather, and a lively atmosphere in Përmet, though it's wise to book 1-2 days ahead during July and August. Early autumn (September) offers a great balance of mild weather and decent flow, with fewer crowds. Rafting typically pauses in winter when water levels and temperatures make the river unsuitable. Whatever the season, the surrounding Këlcyra Gorge and Vjosa Wild River National Park scenery remains spectacular.
While we provide all technical gear — a neoprene wetsuit, booties, helmet, and life jacket — a few personal items will make your day more comfortable. Wear a swimsuit underneath quick-dry clothing, since you will get wet. Bring a complete change of dry clothes and a towel for after the tour, plus an old pair of trainers if you'd rather not use the provided neoprene booties. Sun protection — sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses with a strap — is recommended for the scenic transfer up the Vjosa Valley, and contact lenses or a glasses strap are a good idea if you wear prescription lenses. A waterproof phone case lets you capture the Class II-III rapids and the views toward the Këlcyra Gorge without risking your device.
Your rafting route runs close to several of Përmet's signature natural landmarks. The Këlcyra Gorge, a 13-km limestone canyon that the Vjosa River has carved through the Trebeshina and Golik mountains, lies along the same stretch of river and forms part of the Vjosa Wild River National Park. After your rafting trip, many guests head to the Bënja Thermal Baths to relax sore muscles in natural hot springs fed by the Lengarica River, just a short drive from Përmet. Active travelers often pair this tour with a walk through the nearby Lengarica Canyon, a narrow limestone gorge a few minutes from the thermal baths.
Not at all! Perfect for absolute beginners.
